Oh Scrap! : Simple Inspiration from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Sometimes inspiration for a quilt can come from the simplest item.

One of our "Pickers" let us know they had a couple bags of fabric for us.  The bags contained a lot of yardage, quite a few printed panels and a few previously cut squares.  There were quite a few squares cut from some material that looks like blue bandanas.

I try to find some quick inspiration for things like cut squares because they can create a storage problem if we can't attach them to something quickly.  I took a quick dive into the scrap bin and saw a ...

Some Kid Quilt Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Every year, we try to make large donations of children quilts to one of our recipients.  They have a hard time keeping up with demand around the holidays so we try and help them out.  Last year we sent them 100 quilts.  This year I would love to see at least 150.  So I thought we should start getting some completed now.

First up is this fun little quilt with a transportation theme.  Construction equipment on the front and fire trucks (thanks Karen) and Cars on the back.  Kristin sent in the blocks and one of my local elves sewed ...

Finally Some Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Hey, I finally found a bit of time to write up a blog post with some of our finishes.  We are all preparing for an ice storm that is supposed to hit tonight.  Hopefully it will be a short hindrance and temps warm up quickly.  I just hope we don't lose power.

First up is this fun quilt top sent in by Kristin.  Did you notice some of the blocks are made with smaller bits?  that is a great way to make enough blocks when you are short some.  Kristin also sent in this soft blue print for the ...

March of the Quilt Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Finally, it appears the quilt pipeline is filled, and lovely finishes are getting completed at a wonderful rate. Here are a few from earlier this week.

We received a LOT of lovely green Jewel Box blocks.  We still have hundreds of blocks to work thru and turn into quilts.  This is the 13th quilt made from that block drive.

(Sorry about the shadowing on all of these quilts.  The sun was just going down and I worried it was going to rain the next day.)

We also finished the Veteran quilt made from a bunch of orphan blocks.  We have ...

A Few More Finishes to Share from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

We are starting to focus more on adult quilt again.  It was quite the year end frenzy as we were sending out large numbers of all sizes quilts.  Our stash of finished quilts is quite small right now, so we are working hard to grow or inventories back up.  All deliveries for 2024 have gone out.  I will share the final tallies soon - first I need to share them with the board.

Here are some quilts that flowed across my longarm last week.

Check out this lovely batik quilt top sent in by Cindy. I am loving the color combination ...

Jewel Box Quilts #5 and #6 from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

We have started to fill the quilting pipeline with our Jewel Box quilts so we should be seeing some regular finishes.  Janet has been deciding the layouts on most of these blocks and then I sew them together.  She is not a quilter but is having a ball playing with the colors and he designs.

This plaid backing is actually thin fleece, and I really wanted it to find a home this winter.  So I asked Janet to pull some blocks to go with it.  It is always fun to see someone's interpretation - I would have pulled navy and ...

Block Drive - Split 4 Patch from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It is hard to believe that it is already time for another block drive.  I am nowhere near finished with the last one!  We are making blocks for kids again.  I first made this block DECADES ago and it took me a bit to puzzle out how to make it.  I think you are going to have some fun making them.

I have no idea what it is officially called - so I am going with a Split 4 Patch.

For each block you will need two 5" squares of a novelty print and two 5" squares of a solid or ...

Lots More Baby Quilts from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Right now, I am filling the quilt pipeline with lots of quilts for kids.  I am also trying to get flannel, fleece, corduroy or minky on the backs of most of them.  Many Hands and Many Hearts make large seasonal donations to Bags of Love and they occur through the last three months of the year.

It is a busy time for us.

Chris is a friend of mine and recently gave me nineteen quilt tops for kids.  I have been busy getting them all finished up. This little one is super fun.  The backing for this one came out ...

With Help from Friends from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It is amazing how many people volunteer their time or materials to make all these donation quilts happen.  I appreciate all of you!

This lovely quilt top is one that Linda (and her mom Margie) donated quite a while ago.  The longarm quilter I was sending their quilts to kept having emergencies.  So now they are going to Laura - who does a beautiful job on them.

The backing came from Holly.  It reminds me of striped awning fabric - perfect for this beach quilt.

This quilt top also came from Linda/Margie.  The fabrics are all knitting themed.  Laura quilted it ...

Quilts by Others from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The finishes are just flying through right now!

Oh boy, do I love a good string quilt.  And I didn't have to do anything but sew a label on this one. Thanks so much Jean!

This quilt measures 51 x 54".

Local quilter Chris donated this quilt top.  (She actually donated a total of 19 tops!)  I have been working on getting them all quilted up.

A nice gray fleece went on the back of this quilt.  It is super cuddly.

This quilt measures 58" x 74".

Nann sent in this lovely scrappy quilt top. It is huge!  I ...

Mari’s Quilts from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The same day I received Sue’s six finished quilts, I received a package of finished quilts from Mari.

Needless to say, it was a really good day!

Love this sweet little twister quilt. The colors are bright and happy.
On the back is a soft minky fabric.

I love a scrappy coin quilt.  And I have to say Mari knocked it out of the park with this color combination.  Not something I would have thought of, but I sure do like it!

I love the vibrant back too.

The front of this quilt has some adorable gnome garden fabrics ...

Oh Scrap! : More Quilts from Scraps from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am still working through my flannel scraps.
I didn't think I had that much but I keep making quilts!

For this little cutie, I pulled all the pink flannel scraps I had.  I didn't have a lot of the animal fabric so I just used those as the quilt highlight.
It's very soft and cuddly!

This quilt measures 40" square.

For this lodge-themed little quilt, I not only used flannel scraps, but I also used a few flannel fat quarters I had and didn't know how else to use them.

To make this quilt, I ...

Ooops - So Sorry! from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I cannot believe I totally spaced out Oh Scrap last Sunday. I have been having those days lately where I think it is totally a different day of the week.  If you had a post to link up, feel free to link it up next Sunday. Sorry about that!

Sunday I had a huge shipment show up in my living room. Yep, those are large garbage bags full of fabric!  Kristin had an opportunity to get some fabric at a great price but she knew she wouldn’t be able to ship it from Washington due to cost, so thanks ...

Some Veteran Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Right now, we don't donate a lot of Veteran quilts (but I hope to change that in the future) so I just make sure a couple get finished every month.

This one was made by my good friend Jeanne.  The panel and the eagle fabric were all donated some time ago.

This quilt measures about 60 x 72".

This wonderful quilt was made from scraps (the 6" alternate blocks) and 4-patches from our Churn Dash drive.  Someone had sent in a ton of the colonial blue and cream 4-patches.    I really wanted to showcase them in their own quilt ...

Jewel Box - First Quilt Finish and More from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I had so many quilts to share this week but I just didn't have the energy to write up a blog post.  With it being Friday, I thought a special post was needed.  Today we have the first finish from the current block drive.  I also added a couple finishes from previous block drives.

Cheryl actually sent in this finished quilt top made from the Jewel Box blocks.  I love how she used just purple and green blocks.  The diagonal setting is nice too.

There could not have been a better backing than the fabric sent in by Nann ...

More Autumn Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It is finally feeling like fall around here.  I think all of our Two Steps blocks are made into quilt tops.  Now I just need to get them quilted and shared.  We just might get these done before winter comes along!

I still have a few more fall themed panels that I have been incorporating with the Two Step blocks.  This panel came from Sephanie.  She also sent in the lovely leaf backing material.

Another lovely Two Step finish.  Nann provided the lovely backing for this one. We have now finished 19 quilts from out last block drive.  I know ...

Small Quilts from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been pushing a number of baby quilts through the pipeline to increase the number of quilts we are able to donate to Bags of Love.  I will be delivering 25 quilts tomorrow.

This first quilt top was made by Penny.  She has been cleaning out her flannel stash and making a bunch of strip quilts.  This type of quilts uses up a lot of those width of fabric leftovers.  She also sent the backing and the binding.

This quilt measures about 40 x 42".

(The young lady behind the post is Lecretia.  She has also been helping out ...

Some Lovely Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I would guess that about half of the quilts that we donate are made from quilt tops or blocks that are sent in by others.  Here are a few that we finished this week.

I think this quilt is so amazing.  The beautifully made blocks were sent in by Marci.  Penny sewed them all together for me and Kelly quilted it up for me.  Marci sent in many more blocks so you will be seeing more of these quilts in the future.  These blocks are 10.5" unfinished.

On the back, I used a blue, green and tan homespun that ...

Autumn Finishes from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I think I promised to write this post for my Friday finishes.  But I see I didn't hit the publish button.
Better late than never I guess!

I shared this fun quilt top in an earlier post.  I received a bunch of already pieced strips from Marci.  I decided to use them as sashing and just cut some large squares from various fall-colored leftovers from the last block drive.

I think it turned out really nice!

Dorothy sent in this lovely floral with the brown background.  I thought it worked beautifully on this quilt.

This quilt measures 54 x ...

Kid Quilts from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I have been pumping a number of smaller kid quilts into the pipeline in preparation for our year end donations to Bag of Love.  I did take a small donation to them earlier this month so I could confirm what they anticipate their needs will be.  Their greatest need this year are infant and teen quilts.

Here are a few that were completed this week.

Here is another quilt top made by Chris.  I really like all these simple tops made from bright colors.

Love this bright orange backing sent in by Suzanne.
And a big thanks to Penny for ...
